A substantial funding extension from New Acland Coal will allow the PCYC Oakey Connect program to continue to support the region’s young people for another two years.
New Acland Coal, which has been supporting social and community projects throughout the Darling Downs for more than 20 years, will invest another $360,000 to fully fund the vital program.
Two years ago, New Acland Coal stepped-in and prevented the PCYC Oakey Connect program from closing due to lack of funding.
The Oakey Connect program supports young people to build resilience by developing skills and habits to help navigate life. The PCYC also champions education pathways and relationships between young people and community leaders.
New Acland Coal General Manager, Dave O’Dwyer said the miner’s financial support will fully fund the PCYC Oakey Connect program, including three team members, a vehicle and all program activities and community events.
“The PCYC Oakey Connect program plays an essential role in the local community,” Mr O’Dwyer said.
“New Acland Coal is thrilled Kat Medland and the Oakey Connect team will continue to provide social, physical and mental wellbeing support to young people in the region.
“Youth unemployment and subsequent social issues are a major concern for many families.
“New Acland Coal’s support will allow the Oakey Connect program to continue to deliver a range of initiatives, including training and upskilling programs, exercise and nutrition classes, youth mentoring, school outreach programs, social sport competitions and employment pathways.”
PCYC Oakey Connect program coordinator, Kat Medland said two more years of guaranteed funding will change lives.
“New Acland Coal’s funding extension means the PCYC Oakey Connect program can continue to support and empower young people throughout the district,” Ms Medland said.
“I don’t know what would have happened had New Acland Coal not stepped up and continued to back this amazing program.
“Over the past two years, the PCYC Oakey Connect program has delivered remarkable results and helped primary and secondary school students who have fallen through the cracks.
“The funding commitment means the PCYC Oakey Connect program can provide an even better service and help more families and local young people.
“PCYC is all about youth development, getting kids back on track, back into school, and developing pathways so they can better their education and become great members of the local community.”
