Rehabilitation

As custodians of large parcels of land, we have responsibility to return land to a productive and sustainable use post mining.

The overarching goal of Bengalla’s rehabilitation program is to develop a safe, stable, and non-polluting landscape, with biodiversity representative of the native local environment.

Rehabilitation at Bengalla Mine is undertaken progressively, where disturbed land is rehabilitated as soon as possible following completion of the mining cycle. Topsoil from in advance of the mining operation is stockpiled and, following final landform surface preparation, is spread over areas to be rehabilitated. This maintains topsoil quality and the presence of native seed banks. Our approach minimises disturbed land and visual impacts, and helps to reduce the potential for wind-blown dust and erosion.

The face of the Overburden Emplacement Area, which is visible to Muswellbrook and Denman, will be rehabilitated with high density woody vegetation as required by our development consent. The rehabilitated land will provide habitat corridors for native fauna and periodic grazing by cattle will assist in the management of fuel loads.
