Community partnerships

Bengalla are proud to be a long-term member of the Upper Hunter community and we are committed to its future.

Our contribution to the area extends beyond the immediate economic benefits. We invest in the communities surrounding our operation through donations, providing a helping hand where we can, and with sponsorships and partnerships to build stronger and more sustainable communities.

We work closely with the local community to keep them informed about our operation, including through regular Community Consultative Committee meetings. At these meetings, local community stakeholders, representatives of government departments, and our employees discuss environmental management, mine development and performance and community partnerships.

Work experience

School work experience and work placement programs are a valued and important partnership between education and our company. These programs allow students in years 10-12 from local schools the opportunity to experience ‘real world’ learning opportunities across a broad range of career pathways including electrical and mechanical trades, IT, surveying and Engineering.

Students undertaking Vocational, and Education Training (VET) courses can also complete the mandatory work placement component of their course onsite at Bengalla, allowing students to gain a broad range of skills and experience.

Scholarships

Since the Bengalla Mining Company’s Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme began in 2000, we have supported more than 100 local students in their tertiary studies. Through the scheme we award a total of 8 scholarships each year to students from Muswellbrook High School, St Joseph’s High School Aberdeen, Scone High School and Scone Grammar School and one child of a Bengalla employee with $5,000 towards their first year of study at any university in Australia.

Each year we also award the Bengalla Engineering Scholarship to students undertaking a degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Mining, Environmental or Minerals Process), Surveying or Geology. These scholarships support students throughout their four years of study and include paid vacation work, giving students have the opportunity to work with a number of teams on site.
