Safety & wellbeing

We are committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment to ensure our people go home safely every day.

Our people are empowered to promote and support a strong safety culture with open communication, engagement and accountability.

Our workforce is supported with health and safety training, and a Health and Safety Management System that helps us to improve our performance over time in our quest to be a zero-harm workplace.

Environment & rehabilitation

Effective and holistic environmental management are crucial to the success of New Hope Group’s operations at Bengalla Mine.

We work to identify and use the most practical and sustainable methods of environmental management to minimise the impacts of our activities on our local environment and community. We also progressively rehabilitate mined land, with the aim of returning land to a productive and sustainable use post mining.

An Environmental Management System, with input from trusted, independent environmental experts, guides our environmental practices. This approach allows us to improve our environmental performance over time by increasing awareness, optimising operational control, monitoring compliance and enabling continuous improvement.

Community

At Bengalla, we are proud to be a long-term member of the Upper Hunter community and we are committed to its future.

Our contribution to the area extends beyond the immediate economic benefits. We invest in the communities surrounding our operation through donations, providing a helping hand where we can, and with sponsorships and partnerships to build stronger and more sustainable communities.

Bengalla Homestead

The Bengalla Homestead, situated on our mine lease, is a beautiful house built in 1877 by the builder J.H. Keys. The homestead is included in our Historic Heritage Management Plan, which ensures the consistent upkeep and caretaking of the area.

Since around 2017, the team at Bengalla has undertaken a range of works to restore the Homestead and surrounding buildings that now see it returned to its former glory.

Bengalla Agricultural Company

Agricultural areas near our mine site are managed by the Bengalla Agricultural Company, with the aim of improving the visual amenity of Bengalla’s surrounds while ensuring effective management of this productive asset. The cattle grazing, dairy farming, and dryland and irrigated cropping operation covers 1,100 hectares.
